St Mirren v Ross County
Competition: William Hill Premiership
Date: Saturday 2nd November 2024
Kick-off: 3pm
Venue: The SMiSA Stadium

The Opposition

Ross County sit level on points with Saints having picked up 11 points from 11 matches in the William Hill Premiership.

The Staggies have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three matches since returning from the October international break. Don Cowie's side lost 3-0 away to St Johnstone on their return, but bounced back with a 2-1 win at home against Kilmarnock on Saturday. Wednesday night saw the Dingwall side held 0-0 against Hibernian at the Global Energy Stadium.

There wasn't much between Saints and County last season with both sides boasting a win apiece, while the other match ended in a draw. In the only meeting at The SMiSA Stadium, coming last December, Saints won 2-0 with an own goal from Ryan Leak followed by a Jonah Ayunga strike to give the Buddies three points.

St Mirren come from behind to win at The SMiSA Stadium

St Mirren came from behind to win the battle of the Saints at The SMiSA Stadium.

Benjamin Kimpioka gave St Johnstone an early lead in Paisley, but the Buddies battled back with Scott Tanser scoring a stunning effort on 30 minutes to draw Saints level. Second-half goals from captain Mark O'Hara and substitute Jonah Ayunga saw the Stephen Robinson's men pick up all three points.

The manager named an unchanged starting 11 form Sunday's narrow defeat to Rangers at Ibrox. And it was bright start from his charges with Elvis Bwomono having the first opportunity of the game with just four minutes played when he got in front of a St Johnstone defender to meet a deep Tanser cross, but his header was straight at goalkeeper Ross Sinclair who managed to block.

Despite a positive start, the visitors would strike first as they took the lead on nine minutes. Jack Sanders was quickest to react to a corner and his header was turned in by Kimpioka. Initially the far side linesman flagged for offside, but a VAR check saw the goal stand.

Kimpioka had the ball in the net again 10 minutes later but this one was disallowed for a handball which VAR confirmed.

Saints would find themselves level on the half-hour mark in stunning fashion. Olusanya went down under a challenge in the box but no penalty was given. The ball remained active and was knocked on to Tanser who, 20 yards from goal, curled high into the far corner of the net to level.

Buoyed by the goal, the Buddies grew in confidence after the goal and could have been ahead four minutes later when a terrific Tanser delivery met the head of Marcus Fraser. But the defender couldn't get the connection it needed which meant it was easy for Sinclair to gather.

Olusanya wasn't far away from putting the Buddies ahead with a little over five minutes of the half remaining. He was slipped in by O'Hara but the angle was tight as he made his way into the box and his powerful effort flew wide of the near post.

St Johnstone had the ball in the net again when Adama Sidibeh lobbed the ball over Ellery Balcombe in the final minute of normal time in the first-half. But referee Steven McLean pulled it back for a foul on Charles Dunne. Dunne wouldn't be able to continue much longer with Saints forced into a change before the break. The defender was replaced by Richard Taylor who would make his first appearance since returning from hernia surgery earlier this month.

Robinson's men started the second-half brightly with a Killian Phillips cross coming off the bar after beating Sinclair all ends up. The ball would fall to Olusanya who fashioned some space to get the shot away but his effort was deflected wide.

Saints would be rewarded for that bright start as they would take the lead 12 minutes after the restart. Greg Kiltie was brilliant as he dug in to steal the ball in the middle of the park. That allowed Fraser to take the ball and charge forward before flinging in a terrific cross that found captain O'Hara. His header found the net via a deflection that took it beyond Sinclair.

It looked like Saints had added a third on 65 minutes when Phillips finished off a nice move by slotting through the legs of Sinclair. But a VAR check saw the goal disallowed with Phillips being penalised for a foul in the middle of the park at the start of the move.

That decision looked to take a little bit of the sting out of Saints who had been bossing the opening period of the second 45. But St Johnstone never really came close enough to threaten an equaliser and substitute Ayunga wrapped up the three points in added time when he raced on to a Mikael Mandron ball and finished well to score his first goal of the season.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Marcus Fraser agrees contract extension until 2027

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Marcus Fraser has signed a two-year contract extension that keeps him at the club until summer 2027. The deal also includes the option to trigger a third-year based on appearances.

Named as vice-captain in 2023, Marcus is one of the longest serving first-team players having joined the club in July 2020. A virtual ever-present in the Saints side, Marcus has made 191 appearances during his four years at the club.

The 30-year-old joins manager Stephen Robinson and forward Greg Kiltie in extending their contracts in recent weeks.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Marcus said: "From a personal point of view, I'm buzzing to get it done.

"I'm looking forward to the next couple of years with the club. I've been here for a few years now and it's been great.

Personally, family life, we're happy and I'm settled here. It's been really good playing wise and you can see the direction the club wants to go. That was a big part and I want to be involved in that.

"I've got a good relationship with the manager and I hope he knows I like to work hard and lead by example in training. He has been brilliant for me and the trust he puts in myself, I just try to repay that by working hard in training and on the pitch."

Manager Stephen Robinson added: "Marcus has been a mainstay of the team and been a big part of our top six finish and our European adventure.

He thoroughly deserves it. He’s playing well and he’s a big character in the dressing room as well, so we’re delighted he’s committed his future.

"It’s very important to have a Scottish element involved. You need people to know how to win matches in Scotland and guys like Marcus and Greg epitomise that in terms of their quality, knowledge and desire to win.

"They are two of four contracts we’ve offered with Toyosi Olusanya and Richard Taylor offered very good contracts also and we’re hoping to have more good news in the future."

Match Preview: St Mirren v St Johnstone (30th Oct)

St Mirren's men's first-team are back at The SMiSA Stadium on Wednesday night for the first time in over three weeks as Stephen Robinson's side host St Johnstone.

It's the first of two home matches this week with Saints also hosting Ross County in Paisley on Saturday.

The Buddies come into Wednesday night's match on the back of a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Rangers on Sunday. Despite the loss, the strong performance against the Glasgow side will be what Saints are looking to take into Wednesday in the hopes of returning to winning ways.

Match Details

St Mirren v St Johnstone
Competition: William Hill Premiership
Date: Wednesday 30th October 2024
Kick-off: 7:45pm
Venue: The SMiSA Stadium

The Opposition

St Johnstone come into the match in confident mood having put together a good run of form since the appointment of Simo Valakari as their manager.

The Perth Saints followed up an impressive 3-0 win at home to Ross County with a 2-1 win away to Dundee on Saturday in Valakari's first match in the dugout since his appointment at the beginning of the month. Those two victories have moved St Johnstone into sixth place on 10 points.

The Buddies were victorious in two of the three meetings between the two last season, winning both matches at The SMiSA Stadium. The first came in October 2023 when goals from Keanu Baccus, Mikael Mandron (x2) and Greg Kiltie saw Saints winning 4-0 in Paisley. Mandron was on the scoresheet again in a 2-0 victory in February of this year - the last time the two sides faced off. St Johnstone won 1-0 at McDiarmid Park in December courtesy of an injury-time goal from Chris Kane.

The Officials

Steven McLean takes charge of Wednesday night's match and he will be assisted by Craig Ferguson and Colin Drummond. Gavin Duncan is the fourth official.

The video assistant referee (VAR) is Alan Muir.

Strong performance at Ibrox but Saints edged out by Rangers

A strong performance at Ibrox wasn't enough for Saints to take anything as the Buddies were edged out by Rangers. Mohamed Diomande gave Rangers an early lead, but Alex Gogic levelled with a first-half header. Toyosi Olusanya saw a goal disallowed in the second-half before Vaclav Cerny gave the hosts all three points.

Manager Stephen Robinson made two changes to the side that lost away to Hearts last weekend. Kevin Van Veen missed out with a foot injury that saw him replaced by James Scott. Elvis Bwomono also came into the starting lineup in place of Oisin Smyth. Conor McMenamin was back in the squad for the first time this season after recovering from a tendon injury with the Northern Irish man taking up a place on the bench, while youth academy prospect Callum Penman was also included in the 20 man squad.

After a bright start, Saints should have taken the lead inside the opening 10 minutes when Killian Phillips sent Toyosi Olusanya one-on-one with Jack Butland. The forward raced into the box, but sent his effort wide of the far post.

It was Rangers who would strike first when Mohamed Diomande put the hosts in front on 13 minutes. A powerful strike from Nicolas Raskin on the edge of the area took a deflection and Ellery Balcombe could only push it into the path of Diomande who knocked home from close range.

A Phillips clearance almost gave Olusanya another opportunity to go through on the Rangers goal, but the forward couldn't manage to bring the ball under control which allowed Leon Balogun to get ahead of him and clear.

Saints would deservedly draw level on 25 minutes. Captain Mark O'Hara swung in a super delivery to the head of Gogic who rose above Robin Propper and powered beyond Butland to make it 1-1.

In between a Greg Kiltie chance from 20 yards that flashed wide, Neraysho Kasanwirjo hit the bar for Rangers, while a Cerny cross to the back post evaded the Saints backline to find Nedim Bajrami, but he could only find the side net.

With the scores level at half-time, the hosts made a change at the interval when Cyriel Dessers came on to replace Hamza Igamane.

Saints thought they had gone ahead five minutes after the restart when Kiltie's ball sent Olusanya scuttling clear. Olusanya finished nicely through the legs of Butland only for the offside flag to come. A VAR check showed the forward was agonisingly centimetres offside. A few minutes later, the Buddies felt they should have had a penalty when Olusanya went down in the box. But the referee, who had initially played advantage after Kiltie had been fouled by Nicolas Raskin, pulled it back for a free-kick which O'Hara would send over the bar.

The game was finely in the balance, swinging end-to-end. Ellery Balcombe pulled off a big save on 57 minutes when he touched a Dessers header over the bar. Two minutes later, brilliant strength from Olusanya saw him rob Propper on the touchline and force a good save from Butland at his near post.

Rangers took the lead for a second time with just over 20 minutes to play. A strong run by Dessers saw the substitute burst beyond the Saints defence to get to the byline before rolling back into the path of Cerny who rolled into the net from close range.

Balcombe denied Cerny his second of the match on 82 minutes when he made an outstanding save. The Rangers winger had all the time in the world to pick his spot but the Saints goalkeeper was down brilliantly to push away.

The Buddies would press for a second equaliser but just couldn't find the leveller that their performance merited. Despite the defeat, Saints will take heart from a much improved performance ahead of two home matches against St Johnstone and Ross County next week.
