Last-gasp goal consigns Saints to defeat

A last gasp goal consigned Saints to a disappointing defeat to Motherwell.

The game appeared to be heading for an instantly forgettable goalless draw, neither side doing anywhere near enough to win the game. However, in the final seconds of injury time Alex Gogic was shown a second yellow for a clip and when Lennon Miller swung in the free-kick, Tony Watt sent the away fans wild when his glancing header found the net.

Conor McMenamin had had the best Saints' chances up to that point, twice being denied by Aston Oxborough, while Ellery Balcombe in the opposite goal had dealt with efforts from Steve Seddon and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and looked to have done enough to ensure the spoils were shared until the late drama.

Marcus Fraser's red card against Dundee United being overturned meant Saints could start with the same team for the fourth game in a row. Lennon Miller, who had caused the Buddies problems when the sides met at Fir Park earlier in the season, captained the visitors, who also started one-time Saints loanee Tony Watt.

Conor McMenamin tried to catch Aston Oxborough out with an early Saints free-kick but it lacked the necessary pace to cause any real problems, Greg Kiltie then seeing his shot deflected wide. Motherwell threatened when Jair Tavares hit the bar after Ellery Balcombe had punched the ball away, although the whistle had already gone for a foul on the Saints keeper. It was then the hosts' turn to be denied by the woodwork as Kiltie set up McMenamin and his effort appeared to be tipped onto the bar by Oxborough, although the officials only gave a goal kick.

The Motherwell goalie dealt easily enough with Alex Gogic's header from a free-kick after Shane Blaney was booked for fouling Killian Phillips. It was then Gogic's turn to enter the book when he tripped Andy Halliday just outside the box, the former Rangers man curling the free-kick past the far post although one of his team-mates had strayed offside.

Saints almost made a spectacular start to the second half as McMenamin cut inside before stinging Oxborough's palms from distance. However, the scrappiness of the first half soon returned, what little flow there was being interrupted by a series of needles bookings. As the final quarter approached, Motherwell went close to breaking the deadlock when Halliday lifted the ball over the top and Steve Seddon met it perfectly on the volley, only to see his shot tipped onto the bar by Balcombe.

Mikael Mandron and Roland Idowu were introduced in place of  Kiltie and Toyosi Olusanya and the latter quickly won a free-kick, McMenamin's effort being saved by Oxborough. Moments later the Saints defence were caught out by a ball over the top and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos was through, however Balcombe was alert to the danger and blocked the shot.

As the game looked set to peter out, Gogic was shown a second yellow card in the final few seconds. Miller delivered a wonderful free-kick into the box and Watt was there to head home and snatch victory for the visitors.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Callum Penman signs new contract until summer 2027

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Callum Penman has signed a new contract until summer 2027.

The St Mirren Youth Academy graduate has been involved in a number of first-team squads this season, featuring on the bench in seven of our last nine William Hill Premiership matches.

The 17-year-old has also been a key player in the U18s' Scottish Youth Cup run, where they have reached the quarter-final stage. Callum has also been capped by Scotland at U17s level.

He now joins fellow U18s player Evan Mooney - who agreed a similar deal in the summer - in being signed up for the next two-and-a-half years.

Speaking to stmirren.com, manager Stephen Robinson said: "Callum has been training with the first-team since the start of the season and has really developed and grown in confidence.

He's been a standout along with Evan Mooney in the youth team and we're starting to see the progress of the things that have been put in place. We're delighted that he has committed to the club longer-term."

"He fits into that wing-back role with lots of pace and energy. He may get his chance in the coming weeks. He's been unfortunate not to get his debut and we'll possibly look at the loan market as well to continue his development."

Match Preview: St Mirren v Motherwell (7th Dec)

St Mirren return to The SMiSA Stadium on Saturday as the Buddies play host to Motherwell in the William Hill Premiership.

Stephen Robinson's men will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's 2-0 loss against Dundee United at Tannadice. Despite that setback, Saints have been in good form and are unbeaten in their last three home matches.

A win on Saturday would see Saints leapfrog Motherwell and move back into the top six, with the 'Well currently one point ahead of the Buddies.

Match Details

St Mirren v Motherwell
Competition: William Hill Premiership
Date: Saturday 7th December 2024
Kick-off: 3pm
Venue: The SMiSA Stadium

The Opposition

Motherwell go into Saturday's match on the back off a defeat away to Dundee in the William Hill Premiership on Wednesday night.

The 4-1 loss at Dens saw the Steelmen slip to sixth and made it three defeats on the bounce for Stuart Kettlewell's side, having lost to Hibernian (0-3) and Ross County (1-2) in their previous two.

Motherwell came out on top in the only meeting between the two sides this season. Killian Phillips had given Saints the lead at Fir Park in September, but a Lennon Miller double put the hosts 2-1 up. Mark O'Hara missed a penalty to put the Buddies level before Scott Tanser was sent off on what was a frustrating afternoon.

Saints' last win against Motherwell came in the William Hill Premiership last season with Tanser scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at Fir Park back in September 2023.
