Late drama as Saints win at Easter Road on opening day

A dramatic late Alex Greive header saw St Mirren win 3-2 against Hibernian on the opening day of the 2023/24 cinch Premiership season.

The Buddies had been in control at half-time with two goals in two minutes from Mark O'Hara and Toyosi Olusanya seeing us 2-0 up inside 17 minutes. But the hosts hit back in the second-half with Adam Le Fondre and Christian Doidge levelling the scores in the final 10 minutes. The drama didn't end there though with New Zealand striker Greive heading home the winner on 89 minutes to give Saints an opening day three points.

Manager Stephen Robinson had originally made one change from the side that defeated Forfar Athletic 4-0 in the Viaplay Cup last weekend with Greg Kiltie returning from injury in place of Stav Nahmani. But Saints would be forced into another change before kick-off when Mikael Mandron dropped out with an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Olusanya.

The Buddies started brightly and were awarded a penalty on 13 minutes after a VAR check. Kiltie was tripped in the box by Joe Newell and the Buddies midfielder was incredulous no spot-kick was initially forthcoming. But VAR advised referee Euan Anderson to take a look at the monitor and he pointed to the spot after his check. Saints captain O'Hara sent David Marshall the wrong way as he rolled into the net from 12 yards to score his third goal of the season already.

Less than two minutes later the skipper turned provider as he set up Olusanya to double Saints' advantage. The forward burst ahead of Hibees defender Will Fish to reach O'Hara's pass and slotted through the legs of Marshall to make it 2-0.

The hosts responded by making two changes before the half hour mark with Jordan Obita and Dylan Levitt introduced in place of Allan Delferriere and Josh Campbell. But still Saints were controlling the match and Ryan Strain almost added a third in the final few minutes of the first-half. Newell fouled Keanu Baccus 25 yards from goal and his Australian teammate stepped up to take the free-kick, but flashed the effort just over the bar.

The home side began to exert more pressure as the game headed towards the hour mark and almost pulled one back when Elie Youan managed to get in behind the Saints defence. The Hibs winger bore down on goal but saw his effort well blocked by Zach Hemming at the near post with Will Fish heading the resulting corner over.

Hibs would pull one back with less than 20 minutes remaining after hitting Saints on the counter. Substitution Le Fondre knocked the ball down the line for Doidge and burst forward into the box to receive the return pass from his strike partner before sliding into the far corner of the net to reduce the deficit.

It was Doidge who would draw the hosts level on 82 minutes when he turned in Youan's low ball across from the right to equalise much to the delight of the previously frustrated home support.

The Buddies dug deep though and showed terrific character to find a winner seven minutes later. Kiltie's cross was perfect for Greive who glanced beyond Marshall to win it in front of the nearly 1000 strong travelling Saints support.

Our cinch Premiership season gets underway on Sunday with Saints heading to Easter Road to face Hibernian on matchday one.

Stephen Robinson's men go into the season opener having won Group H in the Viaplay Cup after wins against Arbroath (4-0), Cowdenbeath (1-0) and Forfar Athletic (4-0). Last season's cinch Premiership season saw the Buddies secure an elusive top six finish for the first time in the current format as we achieved our highest top-flight position in 38 years.

Hibernian, meanwhile, finished in fifth place in the cinch Premiership last season which saw them qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Lee Johnson's side were beaten 2-1 by Inter Club d'Escaldes last Thursday in the first leg of their second round tie. The Hibees host the Andorran outfit at Easter Road this evening as they look to overcome the deficit and set up a third round tie with the winners of Djurgardens IF or FC Luzern.

Fraser Taylor and Kieran Offord agree new contracts

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that both Fraser Taylor and Kieran Offord have agreed contract extensions until 2025.

The St Mirren Youth Academy graduates will both go out on loan to continue their football development with Fraser Taylor joining Ballymena United and Kieran Offord joining Edinburgh City until the end of the season. The club will retain the option to recall both in January.

Stephen Robinson confirmed that the pair will continue to train with Saints during the early part of the week while on their respective loan spells.

The manager told stmirren.com: "Both are players that we feel have got a long-term future at the club.

"They are still developing and we feel the next stage of their development is to go out and play competitive football.

Both will train with us on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday which is perfect for us as it means they are still in our system.

"We will revisit it again at Christmas in the hope that they will come back in either January or ahead of the new season and become regular first team players.

"Everybody wants academy players in the system but they have to be game ready. We think we are doing this well with the two loans and ideally they come back in January or next season and are a big part of things going forward.

"Other players will stay that are a wee bit closer to the first team in terms of positions and numbers. It's two different ways to get the players to develop - going out on loan and staying and training with the first team in that environment. Fraser and Kieran will get the best of both worlds."

Midfielder Fraser Taylor added: "I'm delighted.

It gives me another year to develop into the St Mirren first team player I want to be.

"Hopefully, when I go on loan, I play a lot of minutes at a good standard and it'll make me a better player with more experience to come back ready for the first team.

"The manager, Diarmuid [O'Carroll] and all the coaching staff have helped me develop a lot in terms of the physical and technical side of the game."

Forward Kieran Offord said: "I'm buzzing with it.

This is a great place to be to try and develop my football and I know I'll get opportunities. I feel like I've come on a lot since I signed my last deal and have played more first team games than I thought I would.

"It gives me another year to work on my football. I'm hoping the loan deal with give me the opportunity of consistent games to go and show what I can do."

Trevor Carson leaves to join Dundee

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Trevor Carson has departed the club to join Dundee for an undisclosed fee.

Over the summer, Trevor made clear his desire to move on from St Mirren. The club has now agreed a deal with the Tayside outfit for Trevor to move on a permanent contract.

We thank Trevor for his contributions to the club and wish him well in his future.
